Take your seat, relax, but don’t get too comfortable.
Coulrophobia (fear of clowns) is 80 minutes of brilliant slapstick, mime, puppetry, existential angst and big shoes. Our heroes are Dik & Adam, two clowns in search of freedom from a bewildering cardboard world. Join them in their desperate quest for a more meaningful existence.
With enough subversive humour to please the most hardened cynic, Coulrophobia glides seamlessly from sinister to touching, from ridiculous to outright hilarious.
Coulrophobia was made in 2014 by Pickled Image at Nordland Visual Theatre, Norway, and has featured at many of Europe’s leading clown and puppetry festivals. Director John Nicholson co-founded Peepolykus and has written and adapted many stage comedy hits including The Hound of the Baskervilles and The Massive Tragedy of Madame Bovary. Opposable Thumb is Dik Downey’s new company after 20 years as co-director of Pickled Image.
Warning: Coulrophobia contains disappointing nudity and some words more appropriate for those aged 14 +
There will be a BSL interpreted performance and After-show discussion on Sat 25 Jan (7.30pm show), interpreted by Jeni Draper.
"In Coulrophobia it’s clear that clowning can be childish and intelligent, frightening and funny, savage and empathetic, without losing either a sense of mischief or showcasing remarkable skills"
"At the heart of the show are two hugely generous and skilled performers, full of wit and vulnerability. They’re an endlessly watchable double act"
